What is Aldara?

Aldara is a cream containing the active compound imiquimod, which targets the skin cells infected with HPV, stimulating a response from the immune system to fight the virus.

How is the treatment carried out?

Aldara is meant for home treatment. It is therefore imperative that you are able to see the genital warts yourself, and that you are able to apply the treatment where needed.

The cream is applied 3 times per week, for example Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The cream is applied in the evening, before going to bed. The active compound must be given 8 hours to work, before you wash the treated area. If you plan to have intercourse, it is a good idea not to apply the cream until after the intercourse, as the cream can dissolve the condom.

When can I expect results?

Normally, the genital warts will diminish gradually in the duration of 1-4 months of treatment. If previous types of local treatment have been ineffective, Aldara often proves to be effective. If so, then the risk of relapse seems less likely.

Potential side effects

You might experience some redness, slight pain and superficial wounds in the treatment area. If you experience a more severe skin reaction, we recommend you pause the treatment until the skin has normalized. It is a good idea to apply zink ointment on the skin surrounding the genital warts, to avoid irritation of the healthy skin. After the treatment has ended, you might see a slight discolouring of the skin.

Infection risk

Avoid shaving your pubic hair, as you might spread the virus. 

We recommend using a condom for 2-3 months after successful treatment, to avoid infecting your partner.

Pregnancy
