Yeast infection, also called trush or candidiasis, is caused by the yeast Candida Albicans. Overgrowth of this type of yeast can cause inflammation and discomfort in the vagina, on the outer labia and on the penis.
Many women will experience symptoms of a yeast infection at least once in their lives. The following may predispose to yeast infections:
• Menstruation
• Diabetes
• Antibiotics/penicillin
• Birth control pills
• Pregnancy
• Reduced immune system
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms from the vagina: Itching, white grainy and odorless discharge, burning sensation, discomfort, redness, swelling and pain during sexual activity.
Symptoms from the penis: Itching on the head of the penis, reddish small-dotted rash, whitish peeling and coating. The symptoms usually disappear without treatment, but it may be necessary to treat with an antifungal cream.
How to treat a yeast infection?
Vaginal yeast infection can be treated with antifungal agents in the form of suppositories, creams or tablets.
Pregnant women may only be treated with preparations that are given as suppositories or creams.
Is a yeast infection contagious?
A yeast infection is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection but can be transmitted from the vagina to the penis during sexual contact. Partner treatment is rarely necessary.
What can you do yourself?
To avoid overgrowth of yeast, it is important to maintain the natural balance of the skin and vagina.
• Avoid excessive hygiene and do not use soap on mucous membranes
• Do not wash inside the vagina
• Use cotton panties
• Do not use panty liners too often
• minimize tampon use
• Rinse with water after sexual intercourse
