Colonoscopy, preparation using Plenvu

Information in English how to clean your bowel with Plenvu prior to a colonoscopy.

For the colonoscopy your bowel must be empty and clean. You need to take a laxative called Plenvu. You can collect it for free at the Endoscopic Unit, Monday to Friday between 08.00 and 15.00. You can also buy Plenvu at the pharmacy – however this will be without refund.

7 days prior to examination

If you take iron supplements, you must stop taking them 7 days before the colonoscopy. The iron darkens the color of your stool, which makes it more difficult to examine the surroundings during the colonscopy.

5 days prior to examination

Stop eating food contaning grains. Grains can interfere with the camera view during the colonscopy.

The day before the examination

You can have breakfast, lunch and a light meal for supper. Avoid dairy products and fibrous food. Drink 3 glasses of clear fluids with every meal.

You may drink:
Water, clear soup, diluted cordials/clear fruit juice (without pulp), herbal tea, black tea or coffee (without milk)

You may eat:
Light toast/bread, honey, boiled eggs, banana, avocado, boiled meat without skin (turkey, chicken, pork, fish), cooked/baked peeled potatoes, white rice, pasta (not wholemeal), well cooked vegetables, oil/vinegar dressing, broth with well cooked vegetables or pasta.

At 19.00 o’clock your dinner should be finished; this is the last meal before the examination and you are only allowed to drink fluids until then.

At 20.00 o’clock begin drinking the laxative Plenvu Dose 1.

How to prepare Plenvu Dose 1

  • Open the carton and remove the Dose 1 sachet.
  • Pour the contents of Dose 1 into a measuring container that can hold 500 ml of fluid.
  • Add water to make up to 500 ml and stir until all the powder has dissolved. This may take up to approximately 8 minutes.

How to drink Plenvu Dose 1

  • Drink the 500 ml Plenvu Dose 1 solution over 30 minutes. Try to drink a glassful every 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Drink a further 500 ml of clear fluid over a further 30 minutes.

At 21.00 o’clock you have finished drinking Plenvu Dose 1 and the extra 500 ml of clear fluid.

You can expect frequent bowel movement/diarrhea.

The day of the examination

If you take any medicine regularly in the morning, you can take this on the day of your examination when the bowel movements have stopped. However, this does not apply to medicine for diabetes.

4-6 hours prior the examination

Drink the rest of the laxative Plenvu Dose 2

How to prepare Plenvu Dose 2

  • When you are ready to take Dose 2 pour the contents of Dose 2 Sachet A and Dose 2 Sachet B into a measuring container that can hold 500 ml of fluid.
  • Add water to make up to 500 ml and stir until all the powder has dissolved. This may take up to approximately 8 minutes.

How to drink Plenvu Dose 2

  • When directed based on the recommended dosing schedule, make up and drink the 500 ml Plenvu Dose 2 solution over 30 minutes.
  • Drink a further 500 ml of clear fluid over a further 30 minutes.

Additional clear fluid may be drunk before, during, and after you take Plenvu, but you must stop drinking 2 hours prior to your clinical procedure. Drinking clear fluids will help prevent fluid loss (dehydration).
